Brief history:
I have had 4 Leatherman tools since high school. The original Leatherman which I still have and use, the first Supertool which was like the original Leatherman but bigger with locking tools and still use, a Wave (1st generation, no locking tools) which I loved but somehow misplace a year ago and never found it and now the Surge. I ordered the Surge this time because it is bigger than the Wave and has locking tools and being I have large hands this thing rocks. My favorite part about Wave and Surge is the outside knives that can be opened with one hand. Nice because you don't have to carry a separate knife too for times when that's all you need right then. In regard to all of my Leatherman tools. I beat the crap out of them and have yet had one break or fail in any way.
Surge Pros:
Great tool. Beefy and powerful. Easy to use. Mine came with the Nylon sheath which is great...much better than their "leather" sheath which is two pieces of leather (front and back) with stretchy cloth between them.
Surge Cons: They could have skipped the tool exchanger and made it just like the Wave only bigger in size. Put the 2 knives on the outside along with the saw and file and put the scissors inside. The Wave is by far their best design just wish it was the same size as the Surge.
But overall I love the Surge and would not hesitate in buying another one. As for it's weight I don't find it heavy at all. Not much different than my Supertool I've been carrying.
